What is compostable packaging? (& why we use it!)

Here at PULSÍTOS, we're as proud of our recyclable and compostable packaging as we are of our delicious snacks. We worked long and hard to find just the right packaging for plastic-free snacking that would have the least environmental impact.

We knew that we didn't want to contribute to the problem of rubbish littering the earth and the ocean. 0% waste is part of our mission! It's also why it was imperative for us to have a plastic-free wrapper for our healthy snacks.

Our wrappers are marine compostable!

Back when we were developing PULSÍTOS we were living in Barcelona. On a hot day, we decided to take a break and headed to the beach. While we were splashing around, we were gutted to come across a plastic crisp packet floating by in the water! We vowed then and there that we would find a zero plastic recyclable packaging option for PULSÍTOS that's also marine compostable.

This doesn't mean that marine compostable packaging can just be chucked into the sea... But if it does somehow find itself in water, it will simply degrade within a few weeks.

We like that marine compostable packaging is ocean-friendly and doesn't present a hazard to marine life (or unsuspecting swimmers!). Also, once it completely decomposes, it won't leave behind any polluting toxic substances.

Since plastic is made from fossil fuels, it creates harmful greenhouse gases once it breaks down. Also, it breaks into tiny pieces called microplastics which last almost forever and are harmful to marine ecosystems.

Did you know that it takes plastic food packaging 500 years to break down in water?

Compostable packaging vs. biodegradable packaging

Maybe you're wondering what's the difference between 'compostable' and 'biodegradable' packaging. Here's a quick explainer:

Compostable packaging is made up of natural organic materials and will decompose, turning into soil-like compost. But it will only decompose in a composting facility, and not just any rubbish bin or compost heap. Warm temperatures, lots of oxygen and a balance of moisture and nutrients are needed to transform organic waste into compost (we cover more about this below!). When compostable packaging eventually breaks down and becomes compost, it leaves no toxic residues behind that could pollute the soil.

Biodegradable packaging disintegrates thanks largely to natural elements like the sun and bacteria. Plastic packaging that can biodegrade will leave behind toxic waste residue in the soil, or in the water if it's been thrown into the sea.

Right. But doesn't compostable packaging also biodegrade? You may ask...

Yes! It certainly does! But biodegradable packaging will not turn into compost and may leave some toxic nasties behind.

Many materials can eventually biodegrade naturally, but few are compostable. Ultimately 'biodegradable' does not really mean much at all if we're looking at it through an environmental lens.

That's why compostable packaging was the way forward for us.

But we learned compostable packaging was not enough!

We set out to find an eco-friendly compostable packaging solution for PULSÍTOS while steering clear of plastics. However, we soon learned that a compostable wrapper for our snacks was not good enough, simply because if it ends up in a regular rubbish bin or garden compost box, it won't do its composting magic.

This is because compostable packaging is designed for industrial composting facilities and not a garden compost heap. In order for a compostable wrapper to break down and turn into compost, high temperatures and lots of oxygen are needed, as well as balanced levels of moisture and nutrients. These specific conditions can be carefully managed and controlled in an industrial facility and not in a home garden.

PULSÍTOS wrappers needed to be recyclable too!

We quickly understood that if our wrappers could not decompose in a home compost heap, then they had to be recyclable too. We finally found the perfect solution with a manufacturer making compostable AND recyclable packaging for food products.

So simply throw a PULSÍTOS wrapper into your council bin for either food waste or paper waste, and nature will take care of the rest!

We're happy that our 100% plastic-free compostable and recyclable PULSÍTOS wrappers reduce waste, greenhouse gas emissions, and soil contamination, but also sea pollution and the decimation of marine life.

We're proud to be accredited by A Plastic Planet and that we're doing our part to reduce plastic pollution on our earth and in our oceans!
